Fusion are the only HETAS Approved Retailer in Solihull for Solid Fuel Appliances

A properly maintained wood-burning stove—with the flue swept regularly and only recommended wood used—can reduce your annual energy bills by up to 30%. Fusion is committed to following all relevant regulations when advising customers about stove installation.

When selling a wood-burning stove in the UK, you must ensure both the product and the customer's planned installation meet several strict legal and environmental standards.

1. Ecodesign 2022 Compliance

All new stoves sold or installed in the UK must be Ecodesign compliant. This regulation sets minimum efficiency levels and maximum limits for pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Stoves must now emit no more than 3 grams of smoke per hour

2. Smoke Control Area (SCA) & DEFRA Exemption

  • Local Restrictions: You must inform customers if they live in a Smoke Control Area, where it is illegal to emit smoke from a chimney.
  • DEFRA Approval: In these areas, customers can only burn wood if the stove is DEFRA-exempt (also known as DEFRA-approved). If the stove is not exempt, they are legally restricted to burning only authorised smokeless fuels

3. Building Regulations (Approved Document J)

Installation must strictly follow Building Regulations Document J, which covers:

  • Hearth Requirements: The stove must sit on a non-combustible hearth (e.g., granite, slate) at least 12mm thick, extending 300mm to the front and 150mm to the sides.
  • Ventilation: Stoves with an output exceeding 5kW typically require a permanently open air vent to ensure safe combustion.
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarms: A working, audible CO alarm is a legal requirement and must be installed in the same room as any new stove.

4. Installation & Certification

  • Competent Person Scheme: Installations should ideally be performed by a registered professional, such as a HETAS Registered Installer, who can self-certify the work and provide a Certificate of Compliance.
  • Local Authority Notification: If a non-registered installer is used, the customer must notify their local Building Control department before work starts to arrange an inspection.

5. "Ready to Burn" Fuel Standards

Advise customers that it is now illegal in England to sell wet wood (over 20% moisture) in volumes under 2m³. They should look for the Ready to Burn logo to ensure fuel quality and compliance.
